1 | Tell me about your company… What does your company do?
RinaKat is an e-commerce jewelry/accessories retailer with whimsical, trendy, witchy, and pop-culture vibes; featuring designer collections and indie brands.
2 | How long have you been working in the e-commerce field?
I’ve been in the e-commerce and digital marketing landscape for about four to five years now. In many ways, it’s definitely propelled me to utilize my skills and create shoprinakat.com. I feel like I was able to enrich my vision, because of my professional background.
3 | What are some challenges you have faced being an entrepreneur in the retail boutique environment?
I started by reaching out to jewelry lines with no website, no real branding, no look, no feel, or any tone- just a company email. I knew the kinds of brands and designers I wanted to carry, so pitching my story and vision was very vital. With that being said, I was able to get designers on board with my enthusiasm and exciting vision. However, some had tighter guidelines or weren’t looking to expand their boutique roster. Although, that was a challenge at the time; I know now, what it takes to get the things you want and to not be afraid of the word ‘no’.
4 | How much has social media impacted your business?
Majority of my traffic comes from Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook so social media has impacted my business indefinitely. Social media is such a huge force and one of my current goals is to collaborate with influencers!
5 | What motivated you to take the leap and start your own brand?
Well, I always had this idea in my head and after interning with an e-comm site and later working with another for about three years. I was able to learn the business, understand what it takes, and say, “Well, why not? There’s really nothing to lose here. I started with nothing, so failing doesn’t matter.” Plus, my dad owned his own business so the idea was not foreign or scary. I think my true motivation was my surroundings; I was doing it for others and thought it was time to carry out my own vision.
6 | What advice can you give to your fellow millennial entrepreneurs?
Always question, all they can say is ‘no’. Be fearless. Be confident, even if you doubt yourself completely. If it works, how can you make it better? If it doesn’t-don’t discount that content because it might be ahead of its time. I’ve definitely made mistakes in my journey but I’ve also made great mistakes! So, learn from everything and be receptive to others.
7 | What is your favorite product and why?
I honestly don’t have a favorite product in my store just because I LOVE each and every item. I obsess over my inventory because you can mix and match pieces on how you feel each day. If you want a trendy look with a witchy vibe, you can take a Frasier Sterling velvet choker and match it with a crow ring by Rogue and Wolf. So, what I love in the end is the versatility in the products I sell.
8 | Who is your biggest influencer or inspiration?
I don’t have a centralized influencer or particular inspiration. I would say I’m quite all over the place, but I draw inspiration from my parents, my friends, and female icons: Sophia Amoruso #girlboss, Frida Kahlo, Nina Simone, Cindy Sherman, Lady Gaga, Janis Joplin, Kim K, and the list can go on and on. Each one has a quality that I love and gravitate towards. So, I can take the qualities that I love and try to replicate them in my own way.
