Meet Dana, also commonly referred to as the “ Candle Lady” and Founder of Jar Worthy. She is a visual and creative person always looking for new ways to showcase her creativity. Procrastination sometimes gets the best of her but it always gives me enough fuel to get sh!t done. She is thankful to have the support and help from her family and friends; owning her own business is empowering and scary at the same time.
1 | Tell me about your company… What does your company do?
Jar Worthy is a hand poured soy Candle Company based out of Carmel New York. We use 100% soy wax and pride ourselves on using the highest quality in fragrance, dyes and cotton wicks. We aren’t your typical candle shop we offer our guests the experience of creating their own custom scented candles. They get to choose their blend from over 50 rotating fragrances. It’s really fun to see what everyone comes up with because what I call everyone’s “scent palette” is different.
2 | How long have you been working in the candle industry?
Established in 2014, however candles weren’t just the main focus of the company, at holiday craft markets we offered all types of handcrafted good that were showcased in mason jars. After the holiday season was over the demand of candles continued. Which made it easy to establish Jar Worthy as a full time candle company.
3 | What are some challenges you have faced?
Oh I can write a list!
1. Wicks. Wicks are the most challenging because there isn’t one standard wick for every candle container made. All of the jars have different diameters, which require a certain wick size strong enough to melt the wax evenly.
2. Time management is so important I am still learning and adopting new methods to help achieve my tasks. I am the person that needs to hand write a list and cross off each item. Along with the list I set an alarm and only allow a certain amount of time to finish each task before I have to move on to the next one.
3.Being your own Boss. You are only to blame when things don’t get done.
4 | How much has social media impacted your business?
I’m not entirely sure what a business would do without social media these days. My Nanny (Grandmother) is a huge supporter of Jar Worthy and always asks, “What can I do to help?” I quickly respond, “Spread the word”. Social media is such a valuable tool “spreading the word”. I cant count how many times a guest will walk into the shop and refer to a instagram or facebook post which captivated their attention.
5 | What motivated you to take the leap and start your own brand?
Jar Worthy started out as a hobby business that would attend festivals and holiday bazaars. We quickly outgrew the kitchen operation and it came down to finding a location or calling it quits. I was driving through town and saw a “for rent” sign and called up to inquire about the space and here we are today. This past August we celebrated our One Year Anniversary of the shop! Its crazy looking back and seeing how the business has evolved and knowing you were behind the scenes making it happen.
6 | What advice can you give to your fellow millennial entrepreneurs?
One day at a time. It’s so easy to think about the future and what you want to accomplish and where you want to be. And just as easy to get lost in the moment and potentially miss an important step that will lead you in that direction.
Use your resources. Depending on your industry there is a good chance you weren’t the inventor of said industry. Everyday I will research new techniques and products for candle making; the research is there to help you improve the quality of your products. And who knows one day someone else will be turning to you asking you for advice.
7 | What is your favorite product and why?
I’m going to change up this question to “ what is your favorite scent?” we offer 50 rotating scents throughout the year. We add and retire scents seasonally. The one scent that has earned its keep since day one is “cilantro lime”. Which is funny because I can’t stand cilantro in my food- its definitely and acquired taste. Cilantro Lime I best describe as a “ Clean and Bright” scent it always makes me happy.
8 | Who is your biggest influencer or inspiration?
Right now I have a daily commute of 45 minutes or more depending on how everyone feels like driving that day. I’ve noticed the same repetitive motion of hitting the radio off and getting lost in my thoughts. And that’s when I realized why not tune into podcasts while i’m driving and actually fill my thoughts with beneficial information. I currently listen to The Skinny Confidential Him and Hers podcasts. I started following Lauryn the creator of the lifestyle blog almost 5 years ago. I think I’m always drawn back to her because she is down to earth and savvy with her time. I too work(ed) as a bartender to supplement myself while I try to build Jar Worthy to where I want it to be. I think we both can agree and thank Lauryn for our new relationship after we connected through her TSC Facebook group.
