Meet multifaceted digital mogul Liza Glucoft of AwesomenessTV. Her career is digital has spanned over 10 years and has worked for the likes of FX Network and currently has a Facebook show called That Detox Life (embedded*)!
1 | Tell me about your company/career… What does your company do/job entail?
Currently I’m the Executive Producer of Programming at AwesomenessTV which means I concept and create digital series for various distribution platforms.
2 | How long have you been in business or working in your field?
I’ve worked in digital for over 10 years, but I’ve been a producer much longer than that, as I started producing my own plays as early as high school. My first job out of college was as Coordinator of Production at FX Network, so I learned all the ins and outs of TV production. From there, I went to work at Who What Wear which is where learned my love of digital production; the immediateness and opportunity for creativity in short form really excited me.
3 | What are some challenges you have faced being an entrepreneur/working your field?
I think both gender and age have been a challenge; sometimes people don’t take me as seriously as they should at first glance. Other than that, the problem with digital is always resources, as there is much less money than in traditional media. But fewer resources also inspire creativity so sometimes it’s a plus!
4 | How much has social media impacted your business/career?
Social media is my career. Digital entertainment and social media are very intertwined because the all the marketing of digital entertainment is done through social media, and social influencers are the stars of most of work. Oftentimes, the digital content I’m making is going to be used for social media as well or has to be recut for social.
5 | What makes you unique to other professionals in your space?
A lot producers are currently transitioning to digital from linear, partially out of necessity because that is where the industry is going. I essentially started in digital and came up in this medium. It is second nature to me, and I have a deep understanding of the audience.
6 | What advice can you give to millennial entrepreneurs?
You have to put in the work and hustle whether that means reaching out to new people to form relationships with or constantly generating new ideas in your field.
7 | What are you currently working on?
So much! I’m an EP/Director on Dream Date with Brent Rivera, a competition dating show for AwesomenessTV, and consulting producer for This is Summer, a reality show sponsored by Hollister surrounding teens in San Francisco. I also have two Facebook Watch shows I’m working on at Awesomeness TV that will debut in November. In addition, I sold my own show, That Detox Life, to Gunpowder & Sky, and we jointly sold 5 episodes to Facebook. It featured comedians trying ways to detox in Los Angeles and will air by October.
8 | Bossfidence is all about finding your bliss and building your confidence, how did you know that you needed to branch out from your comfort zone?
All the times in my life where I knew I needed to branch out and find a new job were times when I got to a point where I was so unchallenged I stopped learning anything. I was also eating more times a day than necessary, and reading about obscure Flemish designers on Vogue.com to pass the time.
9 | Who is your biggest influence or inspiration?
I couldn’t chalk it up to one mentor. I think having a vast support system is important. A lot of times people give advice from their singular experience so cultivating a support system where you can weigh different points of view is important. That being said, it’s important to always listen to your gut. And my mom told me that one, so maybe it’s my mom!
10 | What do you hope to achieve that you haven’t yet?
Adding Author to my resume! I recently wrote two articles which are now live on PopSugar. For me, these are just the start of a book. I’m excited to venture into the publishing world. I also hope to be running a network one day soon!
