1 | Tell me about your company… What does your company do?
We are Beauty Sanctuary. We are a traveling hair and makeup team based out of Riverside CA, willing to go anywhere the wind takes us! We mainly service southern California. Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego counties.
2 | How long have you been in business or developing your brand?
Our beauty team is relatively new! We started partnering up in December of 2016 but it was always the topic while enjoying our coffee&donuts. Each one of us has a separate background with makeup and hair that goes much farther back than Beauty Sanctuary though. Collectively we have been doing this for 15 years.
3 | What are some challenges you have faced being an entrepreneur?
I think with any independent work, one of the most challenging parts of the job is consistency of work. Not knowing when you will find work next is scary when you’re trying to pay for rent and food, and that fear of the unknown can hinder you from doing what you want or what you’re really good at. For us, we both have multiple jobs to keep Beauty Sanctuary alive. You have to do whatever it takes, sometimes that’s long hours and multiple jobs.
4 | How much has social media impacted your business?
Social media is one of our most valuable tools and our main platform of communication with the people around us. This has opened so many opportunities for us with clients, friendships, and cosmetic companies. We can show the world what we do for little to no cost, and book clients. It’s incredible! To book a bride or client before, there was a lot more leg work. Meeting in person, printed portfolios, now we can send a link to our social sites, clients can view our portfolios at their leisure, and we can book a whole wedding in seconds!
5 | What makes you unique to other professionals in your space?
With each of our artistry backgrounds, we really can offer everything from beauty makeup to special effects makeup. Each of us bring something to the table that compliments the others experience. With such a variety of jobs under our belts, we really can offer any style of makeup. We have experience with photo studios, runway, film, tv, pageants, countless weddings, proms and events. We also specialize in fantasy and special effects makeup. We can’t be pigeonholed into one style; we really can offer you what you are looking for to the best of our abilities with our expertise.
6 | What advice can you give to your fellow millennial entrepreneurs?
As a millennial we are always criticized about not working hard enough, and expecting instant gratification. My advice to these accusations is be consistent with your work. Don’t stop because you’re not being recognized from the get go. Just like anything else in life, success doesn’t happen overnight. We both hear stories of beginner makeup artists who want to be teachers and book sold out classes after they took one class, or wants to work on celebrities because they have 100k followers but have never laid a brush on someone’s face but their own. We confuse popularity with experience. Put in your work. Don’t talk about it, be about it.
7 | Bossfidence is all about finding your bliss and building your confidence, how did you know that you needed to branch out from your comfort zone?
I think for both of us, we realized we weren’t happy in our old jobs and it was time to do something about it. We were both putting in hours of our lives into other peoples companies and dreams, and not our own. Sometimes you have to step back and see what’s truly making you unhappy in life and do something about it. Instead of dwelling on it, we just tried to make a positive change in our own lives in efforts to be happy. Remember you only live once! I know it sounds cliche but seriously follow your passions. If we stayed in our comfort zone, we’d stop learning and expanding as artists. We both push/ support each other too not stay in our comfort zone and to continue to learn more. I think that’s when we realized we could be great business partners and the fact that we do have a lot of similar interests.
8 | Who is your biggest influencer or inspiration?
Brittany’s biggest influencer/inspiration is Henry Rollins. He’s the front man for the band Black Flag. He established his own record label and publishing company because he was told his efforts and contribution to the band weren’t good enough. Epitome of DIY! He continues to inspire many with his words and strive to not have any excuses in life. The just do it attitude. All while being a decent human being… sigh. Marissa’s has so many inspirations such as Karl Silvera the makeup artist for her main man Herman Munster. Also her dad would be an inspiration to continue to chase my dreams. He calls Beauty Sanctuary magician’s……which to us is probably the biggest compliment when it comes to enhancing someone’s beauty.
